Former Telltale Employees Launch New Studio, Tease ‘Bandersnatch’-like Project

Telltale Games is sadly gone, but that’s not stopping four former employees from taking another stab with the launch of a new company. Four former senior developers at The Walking Dead studio, including two former creative directors, have formed a new company called Adhoc Games. What’s interesting about this is that Adhoc Games’ first title is set to be revealed as an “interactive narrative” project that sounds similar to Black Mirror‘s Bandersnatch.

In an interview with Variety, Dennis Lenart and Nick Herman, former Telltale creative directors who left in 2017, alongside Pierre Shorette, former director of writing, and Michael Choung, former lead writer, have co-founded the new studio. The group stated that they wanted to focus on “interactive narrative” games, and repeatedly referenced Bandersnatch as for comparison.

“[Bandersnatch] seems to have scratched an itch that people didn’t quite know that they had,” Herman says. “That’s really exciting, and what we want to do is to make clear that live-action interactive isn’t a novelty, it’s unexplored territory that can be both creatively and commercially viable.”

Being that the Black Mirror episode seemed to attract a broader audience than just traditional gamers, Herman says the challenge for Adhoc will be to try and balance their new game between gamers “while keeping things simple enough for people who are new to the idea of interacting with their entertainment.”

“Making interactive experiences with real actors on the screen is something we’ve always talked about,” Shorette explains. “We all have backgrounds and interest in film and television, so combining that with our experience in games is something we’re exploring right now. With streaming platforms in our homes and cell phones in our pockets we’re in this unique time where the barrier to entry to interaction is gone.”

The group says they’ll reveal more in the “near future” about the project, which doesn’t necessarily sound like a straight-up PC release.
